As you look at pop culture and how they portray gender identity you can see how it reflects into our society. In pop culture girls are portrayed as being pretty, thin, and stylish. As you look into society all of the celebrities take a lot of pride in being pretty. They try, as many other people to, to be thin. All the girl celebrities have very fancy and stylish clothes. All of this reflect
s in our society. You can just look in our school. Every takes a lot of time in the morning to be pretty for the day, they have to have nice clothes, and they want to be thin. An example is what we saw in Mean Girls. The girls at that school did not even fit into to the girl population or were not considered a girl if they weren’t pretty, thin, and stylish.
What we see in men on TV is that they are tough and strong. In Tough Guise you can see how the action figures have changed so much over the years as in size of there muscles.
In earlier years the action figures were small and now they have to be huge which is sending a message to young boys around the world. It is saying that you are not a man if you are tough and strong. In school if you want to be respected as a man you have to be tough and not back down from anyone and this is reinforced in pop culture.
When kids see all these things on TV it affects them greatly. It tells women you have to be thin and stylish while men have to be tough and strong. When you are born as a kid you are classified as a boy or a girl and I feel once this happens you have to be a certain way and cannot not be another way. If you are born as a boy you play with trucks, monsters, cars, all things that are considered masculine. As a girl you play with dolls and cooking things, which are classified as famine. When you are born you are restricted in what you can play with and as you get older the media influences you and they try to make you the right kind of girl or boy.

ReplyDeleteThe media definitely plays a very large role in shaping the "normal" life style for both genders today. As you stated the media portrays all females as being thin and pretty. A perfect model for this is the TV entertainment industry, almost every female role is casted to someone who is attractive; acting talent is almost an afterthought. There are very few exceptions, the only one I can think of is Phillis from the office and it seems like every other line of hers deals with her below average appearance. This sends a message to young females that they have to be thin and attractive to be successful when this is far from the truth.
ReplyDeleteFor males it is much of the same, but instead of being thin males have to have the constant smell of motor oil on their clothes, grunt every on every step they take and need to drive a pickup truck to be considered masculine.
