Gender discrimination

There has definitely been a problem in the last 10 years with gender discrimination in sports. This topic was not as controversial until Don Imus called the Rutgers women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hoes” as seen in this article - http://bleacherreport.com/articles/935-gender-discrimination-in-sports-don-imus-and-the-shaming-of-the-fan. Don Imus is known to say what he wants to say and doesn’t really care. When referring to the Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hoes” he is arguing that women’s basketball is not really important and no one cares or watches it. By saying this Imus is suggesting that men’s athletics are dominant in college and professional athletics.

This can be inferred by the difference in media coverage and the difference in opportunities in professional athletics between men and women. You can see this now of days in sports. The main American sports are the NFL, MLB, and men’s football and basketball. These types of sports get all the coverage on the main TV stations and in the paper. Women’s sports are seen on the secondary stations such as ESPN 2 and others. The most important women’s games are not as important as just a regular men’s game. This has to do with how people view women’s and men’s sports. Women are less physically developed and people view them as worse at sports. They put the same amount of time into their work and people still view them as worse at sports or not important. Don Imus is not the only person with this viewpoint. This is a huge problem with gender discrimination and unless people change there thoughts on women this will continue for a long time.

  1. Interesting take on womens' sports vs. mens' sports, but that is not the topic of the outrage. Prople took offense to his quote because it was extremly racist, I dont see the connection between "nappy headed hoes" and gender inequality in sports.
